PORT Adelaide has revealed another mantra as it works towards September with a ruthless 70-point beating of St Kilda at Adelaide Oval on Saturday night: Never stay down.

It comes as coach Ken Hinkley attributed persistence and strong defence to breaking open a match that was close until late in the second quarter and turning it into a one-sided contest. Hinkley spoke about the importance of players getting straight back on their feet after being bowled over in collisions.

He was impressed with the efforts of Sam Gray and Jarman Impey, both of whom were hit heavily by Saint Tom Simpkin.

Their attitude, which is a cornerstone of the club's program, impressed Hinkley every bit as much as the high-flying mark from best and fairest Chad Wingard or the versatility of lightning form of Robbie Gray.

"I love the ability to get up and go again,'' Hinkley said.

"I'm pretty hard on the players as far as when they're hit, and it's not fair to be honest, because they're getting a fair bit of punishment out there, but I just want them to get up. "And I think it's a fair sign when players get off the ground as quickly as they can. Don't stay down, get up.''

Hinkley also spoke about the defensive effort, something which he felt had been below-par in recent weeks, was a key reason in breaking the game open. But it was the club's belief in the way it is playing and trust in staying with the game plan that underwrote the win.

"Persistence, just sticking to the structures and the way we want to play (opened the game up),'' Hinkley said.

"That was the key.

"The game is always like that. It's always a bit of an arm- wrestle and a bit of pushing and shoving.

"At the end of the day you've just got to keep at it longer, and the longer you keep at it, the more likely it is that it's going to fall your way.''

St Kilda coach Alan Richardson, who was the coaching director at Port Adelaide last season, said some of his team's execution was sloppy but also talked about how advanced the Power had become in its quest to become a defensive power.

"They're quite advanced,'' Richardson said.

"But we dropped away a bit There was a real gap tonight.''
