EXCLUSIVE: MELBOURNE has dodged a draft bullet and is certain to participate in Thursday week's national draft amid an AFL tanking investigation.

But Adelaide was expected to be charged over the Kurt Tippett scandal, forcing it to face the full wrath of the AFL Commission on Monday.

The Crows were bracing to be summoned by the AFL's highest-ranking body to explain their conduct, with investigators finding the club pledged payments outside the salary cap to star forward Tippett.

Its dealings with Tippett - including a undisclosed written understanding to trade him to the club of his choice - were being examined for potential "conduct prejudicial to the draft".

Tippett could be forced to argue to the AFL Commission why he should not be deregistered for his part in the salary cap furore.

Adelaide coach Brenton Sanderson last week admitted to the Herald Sun the Crows expected to be hit hard with sanctions for the next two national drafts.

It is known the club will throw itself at the feet of the AFL after opening its books to investigators and conceding its wrongdoing.

Melbourne faces unprecedented penalties, but investigations into its alleged tanking strategy in 2009 are continuing.

AFL integrity officers were continuing to grill key officials and interviews were conducted as recently as yesterday.

Given clubs need a week to respond to any potential charges, there is not enough time for the Demons to reply.

If they are charged, the penalties would not apply until the 2013 draft, which means Melbourne could take its prized selections next week.

Recruiting manager Todd Viney will pick the draft's No.4 selection, with increasing speculation the Demons will choose Bendigo Pioneers captain Ollie Wines, an 185cm inside midfielder.

Then he will take the value pick of the draft, his son Jack, at selection 27.

The Demons have picks 49, 63, 70 and 88, having secured Chris Dawes, Cameron Pedersen, David Rodan, Shannon Byrnes, budding tall Jesse Hogan, and lightly built flanker Dom Barry in the past month.
