CARLTON has locked in its coaching structure under new master Mick Malthouse - but it couldn't find room for long-time servant Mark Riley.

The Blues made Riley's assistant coaching post "redundant" with his five-year tenure at the club now finished.

Riley was close with sacked Carlton coach Brett Ratten, who was outraged when it was mooted in September Riley would be sacked.

It then appeared Riley would stay on, but be shifted to a midfield role, after talks of legal action given he still had a contract at Visy Park.

"We have spoken to Mark in relation to the new coaching structure and the changing roles going forward and as a result of his position being made redundant Mark has been in discussions with other AFL clubs," Blues football boss Andrew Mackay said in a statement.

"Mark has tremendous experience through his time in football and we certainly appreciate the contributions he has made to the Carlton Football Club over the last five years and we wish him and his family the very best."

Malthouse will be reunited with Rob Wiley, who has been appointed director of coaching and development at the Blues next season.

Carlton last week announced former Fremantle midfielder Luke Webster would take control of VFL affiliate Northern Blues.

Malthouse will take the Blues to Arizona on a high-altitude pre-season training camp this year, instead of returning to Qatar, where Carlton trained last summer under Ratten.
