Inconsistent Crows ‘frustrated’

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 12 Juni 2014 | 16.19

Adelaide Crows coach Brenton Sanderson says his team was blown off the park in the second half.

ADELAIDE ruckman Sam Jacobs has conceded a dose of frustration has crept in among the Crows but is confident their good passages of play mean the game plan is still sound.

The Crows have been up and down all season — beginning with three straight losses but then recovering — and hit another snag when they lost to Fremantle last week.

It has left the club in a group of teams fighting for a top-eight spot and, as much as Jacobs said there had been no panic around West Lakes, the Crows players were getting edgy.

CHAPMAN PUTS TRUST IN SANDO

"As the supporters are, the players are frustrated as well," Jacobs said. "We're working overtime to make sure that we get the most out of our sessions.

"At the moment, that's where the frustration comes from because we are training really well and at a really high standard during the week.

"But for whatever reason, we're not producing it ... at the moment it's every second week.

"We are trying to change things ... there are things about our performance that need to change.

"But training was really upbeat again as it has been all week.

"We had a really good session today and we're well prepared and ready for the Kangaroos."

Teams: Judd back, Sylvia gets his chance

CARLTON star Chris Judd will make his long-awaited return from a hamstring injury on Friday night against Hawthorn.

Judd replaces goal sneak Jeff Garlett in Mick Malthouse's side for the MCG blockbuster.

HAWTHORN has bolstered its ruck division with David Hale returing at the expense of Luke Lowden.

Lowden, who kicked three goals on debut last week after six long years on the Hawks' list, was omitted.

NORTH Melbourne forward Lindsay Thomas returns after sitting out last week with hamstring tightness.

Thomas tweaked his muscle in the win over West Coast.

Robbie Tarrant also returns for the Kangaroos after playing in the VFL last week - his first game back from nagging leg problems.

FREMANTLE recruit Colin Sylvia is set to make his debut for the Dockers after spending the first half of the season in the WAFL.

Luckless Docker Anthony Morabito has been named as an emergency.

WEST Coast is taking no risks with veteran ruckman Dean Cox (soreness) while Sharrod Wellingham is also out.

Captain Darren Glass is the third out following his shock retirement today.

PORT Adelaide midfielder Jared Polec is out with an ankle problem, while Geelong ruckman Hamish McIntosh will also miss his first game for the season.

Coach Hinkley praises Power’s bruised battlers

Ken Hinkley gives the Power's defence credit in the side's decisive 129 - 59 win over St Kilda

PORT Adelaide has revealed another mantra as it works towards September with a ruthless 70-point beating of St Kilda at Adelaide Oval on Saturday night: Never stay down.

It comes as coach Ken Hinkley attributed persistence and strong defence to breaking open a match that was close until late in the second quarter and turning it into a one-sided contest. Hinkley spoke about the importance of players getting straight back on their feet after being bowled over in collisions.

MATCH REPORT: EIGHT ON THE TROT HAS POWER SOARING

He was impressed with the efforts of Sam Gray and Jarman Impey, both of whom were hit heavily by Saint Tom Simpkin.

Their attitude, which is a cornerstone of the club's program, impressed Hinkley every bit as much as the high-flying mark from best and fairest Chad Wingard or the versatility of lightning form of Robbie Gray.

"I love the ability to get up and go again,'' Hinkley said.

"I'm pretty hard on the players as far as when they're hit, and it's not fair to be honest, because they're getting a fair bit of punishment out there, but I just want them to get up. "And I think it's a fair sign when players get off the ground as quickly as they can. Don't stay down, get up.''

Hinkley also spoke about the defensive effort, something which he felt had been below-par in recent weeks, was a key reason in breaking the game open. But it was the club's belief in the way it is playing and trust in staying with the game plan that underwrote the win.

"Persistence, just sticking to the structures and the way we want to play (opened the game up),'' Hinkley said.

Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley with high-flying forward Chad Wingard. Picture: Sarah Reed.

"That was the key.

"The game is always like that. It's always a bit of an arm- wrestle and a bit of pushing and shoving.

"At the end of the day you've just got to keep at it longer, and the longer you keep at it, the more likely it is that it's going to fall your way.''

St Kilda coach Alan Richardson, who was the coaching director at Port Adelaide last season, said some of his team's execution was sloppy but also talked about how advanced the Power had become in its quest to become a defensive power.

"They're quite advanced,'' Richardson said.

"But we dropped away a bit There was a real gap tonight.''

Jacobs a certain starter against Dockers

Sam Jacobs, centre, at Crows training. Source: News Limited

ADELAIDE showed its supreme confidence in the fitness of ruckman Sam Jacobs by playing back-up Shaun McKernan in the SANFL on Saturday.

There had been concern over whether Jacobs would recover from a blow to the hip against Gold Coast last weekend but he trained freely on Saturday and is certain to start against Fremantle on Sunday.

SCROLL DOWN TO SEE BOTH TEAMS

The Crows have taken two emergencies on the trip West - midfielder Cameron Ellis-Yolmen and defender Luke Thompson - but expect to remain unchanged.

McKernan's absence from the travelling party also suggests Taylor Walker is ready to back up after his five goal haul against the Suns.

Walker copped a corkie in his calf but has recovered well.

Crows coach Brenton Sanderson says the club's medical staff will continue to monitor Walker closely in his first season back from a long-term knee injury - particularly given the number of six-day breaks Adelaide has in the back half of the season.

Fremantle are confident that Nathan Fyfe will be fit to play against the Crows despite being on crutches after their win over the Bulldogs.

"We have got some bands of six-day breaks coming up so he, like every player, will just analyse their wellness log, we have to be smart with all of our players but certainly Tex," Sanderson said.

"Some high intensity games and six-day breaks we'll be a little bit cautious with some guys and he probably falls into that category."

MORE: PAVLICH PREDICTS MIDFIELD WILL DECIDE THE MATCH

Adelaide did some last-minute fine tuning on their stoppage structure at Saturday's session at AAMI Stadium as it prepares to counteract the Dockers' strong midfield.

"They're actually trying to do what we're trying to do," Sanderson told his players.

"It's going to be great."

Jared Petrenko watched training in a moon boot as he begins to rehabilitate a shin injury.

The small forward is expected to spend four to six weeks on an injury list which saw ruckman Angus Graham and young defender Sam Siggins added to it this week.

Jacobs fit for Fremantle

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 06 Juni 2014 | 16.19

Adelaide Crows ruckman Sam Jacobs duels with Gold Coast's Zac Smtih. Picture: Sarah Reed Source: News Corp Australia

Adelaide Crows forward Jared Petrenko has been ruled out for six weeks with a stress fracture in his leg, while the Crows received better news for Sam Jacobs and Taylor Walker.

CROWS coach Brenton Sanderson says lead ruckman Sam Jacobs will play against Fremantle in Perth on Sunday.

Sanderson said Jacobs — nursing a bruised hip — breezed through a 40-minute closed training session this morning and should be on the plane to WA tomorrow.

The only concern is if Jacobs pulls up sore tomorrow morning. But that is unlikely, Sanderson said.

Jacobs' availability is crucial for Adelaide, which comes up against the AFL's tallest and most in-form ruckman — 211cm giant Aaron Sandilands.

"He looks good," Sanderson said of Jacobs, who is enjoying a strong year.

"He got through the full session today, so I can't see any reason why he won't play.

"We'll probably see how he pulls up tomorrow before we set off but he looks fine."

CROWS' ROLLER-COASTER SEASON

Sanderson said Jacobs "did everything" at training today and "didn't look restricted".

"He looks like he'll be fine to play," he said, revealing Jacobs' "deep cork" was the result of friendly fire from teammate Patrick Dangerfield's knee in the 32-point win against Gold Coast last Sunday.

"It restricted him on matchday but he's a pro and has been doing lots of recovery work and, to his credit, it looks like he's going to get up.

"If will be important to have him against such a unique ruckman like Sandilands, who is 10cm taller than any ruckman he comes up against."

Sanderson said star forward Taylor Walker — back in form with five goals against the Suns — would also play on Sunday, despite nursing a sore calf during the week.

The Crows will trim their 25-man squad to 22 later today.

Richo coy on inside Power knowledge

St Kilda coach Alan Richardson and assistant coach Adam Kingsley at training at the Adelaide Oval. Picture: Calum Robertson. Source: News Corp Australia

ST Kilda coach Alan Richardson returned to Adelaide yesterday for his first game against his old club for premiership points but downplayed the importance of his inside knowledge of Port Adelaide.

First-year AFL senior coach Richardson, who was coach Ken Hinkley's right-hand man as coaching director at Alberton, agreed that he had intimate knowledge of the players but also recognised that the Power's program had evolved.

``It's a challenge,'' Richardson said. ``It's another footy team but it's a footy team that I personally have really fond memories of, albeit it was only for 12 months.

``It was only the start of the rebuild and their in a fantastic position now, playing terrific footy, two games clear on top, and they're on top with 50,000 people turning up to a stadium to where in the past we were putting T-shirts over seats so that people would think there was a crowd.

``So it's an amazing, the turnaround. But this footy team presents a great opportunity for our team to come and accept the challenge and embrace the challenge, which is going to be significant.''

As the Saints acclimatised themselves with a sunny Adelaide Oval, Richardson said he was confident they would be competitive but recognised that they were in a rebuilding stage.

PORT Adelaide has broken another hex after a last-quarter blitz led to an 18-point win against Fremantle at Adelaide Oval.

Two weeks after they broke a longstanding hoodoo against Geelong, Port's players pencilled in their first win against the Dockers since 2009 after six straight losses.

It was defensive, congested, crowded and messy until the game finally opened up in the last quarter.

Before that, Port had not managed to kick two goals in a row.

But the time Aaron Young slotted a set shot in the 17th minute they had banged on six in a row. The work was done.

There were three obvious sparks to the change of complexion in the game. Jackson Trengove went into the ruck after Brent Renouf was subbed off and was brilliant in his job in containing Aaron Sandilands. The way he crashed into his taller opponent was a match changer.

Port Adelaide Power coach Ken Hinkley and star Chad Wingard address the press following their side's win over Fremantle.

Kane Cornes went to Nat Fyfe, who had been outstanding for Fremantle, and managed to slow him down. And Chad Wingard made the forward line his personal centre stage. He had kicked five by the time was under lock and key and could easily have had another couple had it not been for a couple of misses.

Others muscled in on the game when it was there to be one, few more than captain Travis Boak and former captain Dom Cassisi, who were calm but unrelenting around the packs and helped set up goals from stoppages — something that had been a rarity in the first half.

For the bigger part, the game was a mess. Both teams were running like a toddler through a living room; as a spectator you were just waiting for a fall. In football, that means turnovers and they were plentiful.

One in the last line of defence led to a goal from Matt De Boer, who cashed in for the Dockers' first goal. But it was one of many.

Paul Duffield could be in trouble with the match review panel for a contentious bump on Chad Wingard.

One of the game's most controversial characters, tagger Ryan Crowley, spent the bulk of his time on Port captain Travis Boak and it made for a riveting duel. Like the match, it took time to settle.

Jay Schulz, who was leading the Coleman Medal race leading into this round, kicked Port's first from a tight angle in the forward pocket but Fremantle were mindful of him, making sure that at most time there was more than one of their players paying attention to his moves.

What Port Adelaide did exceptionally was keeping the ball in their forward 50; there was a passage when the Power were leading by two goals to one when they stayed in there for minutes, which seems like forever in a game of football.

But if Fremantle hasn't replicated last year's form, the Dockers are bringing the same amount of courage to matches. It was typified by a mark from backman Alex Silvagni, who crashed into teammate Nick Suban when taking a pack mark. Suban was helped off the ground but returned later.

The Dockers are also exceptionally hard workers; they manage to have outnumber the competition at contests and make good use of their spare players in the backline.

Tendai Mzungu was exceptional in that role against the Power. He roamed the backline, anticipated the play and kept running into the right spots. The amount of times he took a mark in the last line of defence would have been deflating for the Power midfield.

But it also had itself to blame: the forward entries came from a long way out and Schulz and the other forwards were rarely marking on an easy lead-up from a 30m kick.

Ruckman Matthew Lobbe was a late withdrawal for Port Adelaide after reporting a sore calf before the game which left Brent Renouf with the job of standing the game's biggest player in 211cm, 120kg Sandilands. By half time, the Dockers were leading the hit-outs by 27 to 19 and were 7-3 in centre clearances.

Fremantle Dockers coach Ross Lyon addresses the press following his side's loss to Port Adelaide.

What made it worse was Sandilands' form around the ground. He linked up, took off on the odd run worked from contest to contest. When 299-gamer Matthew Pavlich dribbled his first jail through in the second quarter it was the direct result of Sandilands' efforts.

Others stood out for Fremantle, among them Suban and Fyfe.

Then Port brought Trengove into the ruck, Wingard made it known that he was a central character and Cornes went to Fyfe.
